- a fair, safe and productive public sector work environment.
Key activities of the department include:
- strategic policy research and advice
- development of legislation and related materials
- information and education services

- registration and licensing activities.
Our stakeholders are workers, self-employed people and their families; private and public sector employers; unions, employer associations and professional bodies; and the community of Queensland.
The Department of Industrial Relations was created as a result of machinery-of-government changes in February 2001. The department brought together the functions of industrial relations and workplace health and safety from the former Department of Employment, Training and Industrial Relations and the Office of Electrical Safety, from the former Department of Mines and Energy.
