Performance requirements

Section 131 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2002 (PDF, 1 MB) states that the works of an electricity entity must:

perform under the service conditions and the physical environment they operate in;
have enough thermal capacity to pass the electrical load they are designed for, without compromising their electrical or mechanical performance;
be able to pass short circuit currents to allow protective devices to operate correctly;
have enough mechanical strength to withstand anticipated mechanical stresses caused by environmental, construction or electrical service conditions;
be designed and constructed to restrict unauthorised access to exposed live parts;
have accessible records relating to their design, construction, operation and maintenance; and
have clear and up-to-date labels identifying any parts whose identity or purpose is not obvious.

Electrical equipment forming part of the entity's works must be tested and inspected before use to ensure suitability and electrical safety.
