Electrical Safety Plan for Queensland 2003-2008

This is the first Electrical Safety Plan for Queensland providing a blueprint for improving electrical safety in Queensland.

The plan complements the State Government's reforms that commenced in October 2002, which include new laws and harsher fines, the appointment of inspectors and specialists in electrical safety, the establishment of a new regulator, and new funding arrangements to support electrical safety and workplace health and safety programs.

The underlying vision of the Electrical Safety Board is to help prevent and reduce deaths or injuries caused by contact with electricity.

The goals outlined in this plan include reducing electrical fatalities to below the national average and achieving a sustained reduction in electrical incidents requiring hospitalisation.

The plan also sets out strategies to meet the Board's five priority areas for improvement in electrical safety-power lines, dwellings, workplaces, electricity supply industry and the general electrical industry.

The strategies and activities cover education and awareness, legislation, compliance, training, equipment design and incentives.
