IBM ThinkPad notebook computer adaptor

Electrical product safety recall

Identification

IBM ThinkPad notebook computer adaptor, IBM part no. 02K6549

ELV adaptor for IBM ThinkPad iSeries, 390 and 240 series, and sSeries notebook computers. Machine types 1161, 1171, 2621, 2651, 2627, 2609, 2624, 2626, 2666, 2667. The adaptors can be identified by the IBM part number 02K6549 and three hollow metal pins in the mains input connector on the adaptor brick. Adaptors with solid pins are not affected. Shipped between January 1999 and August 2000.

Safety issue

The adaptors may overheat, resulting in melting of the adaptor housing and charring of the circuit board inside the housing. The cause of the failure has been determined to be due to cracked soldered joints where the male a.c. pins on the adaptor brick connect internally to the printed circuit board.

Action required

Adaptors affected by this recall should not be left plugged into an a.c. power outlet while unattended.
