Electrical licences

Unlicensed electrical work is illegal in Queensland.

General licensing information
You must be licensed before undertaking electrical work

Classes of licences
Electrical mechanic, electrical linesperson, electrical fitter, electrical jointer, electrical work training permit and restricted electrical work licence

Apply for an electrical work licence
Electrical work licence (permit holders), electrical work licence (for an apprentice), electrical work licence (other than apprentice), restricted work licence/permit (other than apprentice), applying for an additional electrical work training permit.

Interstate and New Zealand applicants (mutual recognition)
Information for people with electrical licences issued in other states of Australia or New Zealand who want to do electrical work in Queensland.

Overseas applicants
Overseas applicants have to meet certain standards to be issued with a Queensland electrical work licence

Serving and non-serving defence force applicants
If you undertook trade training in the Australian Regular Army, the Royal Australian Navy or the Royal Australian Air Force, and now want to work as an electrician or electrical contractor, you will need to have your skills assessed

Apply for an electrical contractor licence
Qualification requirements for qualified technical and business people, approved courses, documentation to include in your application

Renew your electrical work licence
An electrical worker licence is valid for five years, unless it is cancelled or suspended

Renew your electrical contractor licence
Electrical contractor licences must be renewed annually

Change your details
You must advise if you have changed your address or contact details

Apply for a replacement card
Use this form if you have misplaced or damaged your licence card

Apply for additional licence cards
Use this form if you require extra copies of your licence

Update the qualified persons
If the qualified technical or business person changes on your electrical contractor licence, you have 30 days to advise the Department
