State Government's Joint Submission - National wage case 2000/2001
Purpose
The purpose of this submission is focus on the Workplace Relations Act 1996, Queensland Industrial Relations Act 1999 and New South Wales Industrial Relations Act 1996 legislation.
Issued covered
- trends in Agreements and Awards
- safety net increases and employment
- wages and the demand for labour
- recent research on Australian and overseas developments
- needs of those on low pay
Outcomes
In this case the Australian Industrial Relations Commission is being asked to consider an application by the unions represented by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) for:
- a $28 per week increase in minimum award rates for award skills classifications up to an equivalent of $492.20 per week, and a 5.7 per cent increase for classifications above that level; and
- a commensurate adjustment of allowances which relate to work or conditions of employment which have not changed (consistent with the Commission's approach in recent safety net decisions).
The analysis of developments in agreements and awards shows that there is even clearer evidence of the trend that was highlighted in the Joint Labor States submission to the previous Living Wage Case.
Many employees are simply missing out on the flow on through enterprise bargaining of the benefits of the sustained economic advancement over the past years.
