State Government's Joint Submission - National wage case 2001/2002
Purpose
The purpose of this submission is to provide information on issues such as Australia's economic performance and outlook, needs of the low paid, working Australians in poverty, who are the low paid and impact of structural change to the labour force on the low paid.

Outcomes
The Joint Labor Governments have adopted a responsible position concerning the ACTU claim, paying careful regard to Australia’s continued economic wellbeing. Due emphasis has also been given to the needs of the low paid and the importance of maintaining a viable and fair award system.
Section 88B(2) of the Workplace Relations Act 1996 requires the Commission to establish and maintain fair minimum wages and conditions of employment safety having regard to:
- provide fair minimum standards for employees in the context of living standards generally prevailing in the Australian community;
- economic factors, including productivity and inflation, and the desirability of attaining a high level of employment; and
- needs of the low paid when adjusting the safety net
