State Government's Joint Submission - National wage case 1999/2000
Purpose
This submission is made on behalf of the States of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania ("the Joint State Governments").
Issues covered
- trends in agreements and awards, federal jurisdiction, agreement making in state jurisdictions, economic performance/outlook, overview of Australian economic performance and outlook and state economic conditions
- application by the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) to vary a number of awards to allow employers to recruit employees for a probationary period using only the federal minimum wage
- application by the unions represented by the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) for:
- a $24 per week increase in minimum award rates for award skills classifications up to an equivalent of $537.80 per week, and a 4.5 per cent increase for levels above that level
- a commensurate adjustment of allowances which relate to work or conditions of employment which have not changed consistent with the AIRC's approach in recent safety net decisions
Outcomes
The outcome from this submission is for the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) consider applications submitted by the unions represented by the ACTU and the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI).
