Queensland minimum wage
Purpose
The purpose of this report is to inform the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) to consider an application from the Queensland Government for a general ruling on establishing the Queensland minimum wage (QMW) at no greater than $431.40 for full-time adult permanent employees who are not covered by industrial instruments.
Issues covered
- establishment of Queensland minimum wage
- equivalent hourly minimum wage rates for employees who are not covered by industrial instruments
- adults employed on a full-time or permanent basis
- consideration of any provisions for exemption for groups of employees or for other special factors
Outcomes
There were two major outcomes from this submission:
- Amendment to the Industrial Relations Act 1999 at section 287(2) to establish a Queensland minimum wage for full-time permanent adult employees who are not covered by an industrial instrument, with equivalent hourly minimum rates for employees working on a non-permanent non-full-time basis.
- Establishment of the Queensland minimum wage will apply to all Queensland employees, whether or not they are covered by an industrial instrument. Most significantly, it will protect the lowest paid and most disadvantaged workers in Queensland.
