Public holidays

The Industrial Relations Act 1999 (PDF, 1.9 MB) provides a public holiday entitlement for employees.

The Act says that an employee who would ordinarily work on a day on which a public holiday falls is entitled to full pay, whether or not they work.

Casuals, pieceworkers, school-based apprentices and trainees don’t get this entitlement. Employees rostered off on a public holiday don’t get this entitlement under the Act; however, many awards or agreements do give entitlements to employees who are rostered off on a public holiday.

The Holidays Act 1983 makes provisions for all public and bank holidays in Queensland.

Further information is available on public holiday entitlements .
