High risk metal

This campaign aims to reduce the incidence of serious injuries in fabricated metal and sheet metal manufacturing workplaces.

The fabricated and sheet metal manufacturing industry sub-sectors are a consistently high source of sprains, strains, open wound and fracture injuries. One in four workplaces in these sub-sectors make a claim, averaging three or more claims a year.

The focus in 2011-12 is on manual tasks, slips, trips and falls, hitting or being hit by moving objects and traffic management.

The campaign includes:

Phase 1: Compliance and audit inspections (small and large metal manufacturers)
From January 2012 to June 2012, small and large metal manufacturers will receive a visit from a Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspector.

Phase 2: Compliance and audit inspections (medium metal manufacturers)
From July 2012 to August 2012, medium metal manufacturers will be visited by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors and be assessed. Medium sized business inspections are later to allow those businesses involved in the Medium Sized Business Initiative sufficient time between proactive visits.

Phase 3: Education
The education phase will promote key outcomes from the compliance and audit inspections undertaken in phases 1 and 2. Following the compliance and audit inspections, data will be analysed and used to focus future activities including resource development.
