Plastics

This campaign aims to reduce the incidence of serious injuries in plastics manufacturing workplaces.

The plastics manufacturing industry sub-sector is a consistently high source of sprains, strains, open wound and fracture injuries. One in four workplaces in this sub-sector makes a claim, averaging three or more claims a year.

The focus in 2011-12 is on manual tasks, slips, trips and falls, hitting or being hit by moving objects and traffic management.

The campaign includes:

Phase 1: Compliance and audit inspections (small and large plastics manufacturers)
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors will visit small and large plastics manufacturers across Queensland from September to December 2011.

Phase 2: Compliance and audit inspections (medium sized business)
From July 2012 to August 2012, medium sized plastics manufacturers will be visited by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors be assessed. This campaign will allow those businesses involved in the Medium Sized Business Initiative sufficient time between proactive visits.

Phase 3: Education
The education phase will promote key outcomes from the compliance and audit inspections undertaken in phases 1 and 2. Following the compliance and audit inspections, data will be analysed and used to focus future activities including resource development.
