About the MSBI program

Why are we conducting this initiative?

The Queensland Workplace Health and Safety Strategy 2004-12 has set targets for a reduction in fatalities and injuries, including:

  • 40 per cent decrease of work-related injuries
  • 20 per cent decrease in work-related fatalities.

In Queensland there are nearly 8000 medium sized businesses, employing 18 per cent of Queensland’s workforce. While medium sized businesses only employ about 1 in 5 of our workforce, they account for over 1 in 3 workers compensation claims lodged every year.

If Queensland is to achieve the reduction targets then WHSQ must work with medium sized businesses to address the high number of compensation claims lodged each year.

What does the medium sized business initiative involve?

WHSQ inspectors will be visiting Queensland medium sized businesses in 2010/2011 to check the safety management systems used.

Medium sized businesses will be inspected, regardless of previous contact with WHSQ.

What is a medium sized business?

For this initiative you are considered a medium sized business if your declared wages to WorkCover Queensland during the 2008-2009 financial year was between $1 million and $10 million.
