Incident:

On 5 September 2002, an employee of Bunnings Building Supplies Pty Ltd sustained injuries to three fingers of his right hand when they contacted the revolving blades of a bench planer.

Alleged breach:

s.24(1) and s.28(1) Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995

Summary of undertakings:

  • developing and implementing a new occupational health and safety program at the workplace
  • implementing regular third party audits of the occupational health and safety management system consistent with AS/NZS 4801
  • implementing recommendations resulting from the audits of the occupational health and safety management system
  • conducting an annual safety seminar for all suppliers and contractors during Queensland WorkSafe Week 2006
  • presenting a case study at a trade night seminar during February-March 2006 discussing the importance of machine guarding and the safe operation of power machinery such as saws
  • publishing an article in the Trade Talk newspaper addressing machine guarding and the safe operation of power machinery, and
  • donating an agreed amount to the local hospital.

This undertaking has a total minimum expenditure of $60 935 (including recoverable departmental costs).
