Incident:

On 26 July 2006, a group of BRB Modular Pty Ltd workers were lifting a section of roof onto a building under construction using a mobile crane at the company premises in Crestmead, Queensland. A temporary prop supporting the roof section collapsed causing the section of roof to fall and strike a worker.

Alleged breach:

s.24(1) and s.28(1) of the Workplace Health and Safety Act

Summary of undertakings:

Activities BRB Modular Pty Ltd will undertake include:

  • conduct a series of third party audits of the company’s occupational health and safety management system against AS/NZS 4801: 2001 and implement any subsequent audit recommendations
  • engage an external safety consultant to carry out a full audit of the workplace to ascertain areas of safety shortfall and provide a report to the company prioritising their need for upgrade
  • provide a range of occupational health and safety training for staff at all levels
  • introduce a staff award system for safe work practices or advising on improved safe work practices
  • introduce a contractor management program that will provide training along with safety consultancy advice and support to company contractors to improve their own safety management systems, and
  • donate an agreed amount each year for three successive years to a local special needs school.

This undertaking has a total minimum expenditure of $255,000 (including departmental costs).
