Inspector conduct

The conduct of Workplace Health and Safety Queensland inspectors is governed by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General’s code of conduct, and the Global Code of Integrity for Labour Inspection (PDF, 1.6 MB). Both these codes provide a framework for inspectors to exercise their powers under the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 (PDF, 1 MB).

The Global Code of Integrity for Labour Inspection is an international code that seeks to establish credible, ethical and consistently professional behaviours expected of labour inspectorate employees worldwide. It was developed by the International Association of Labour Inspection (IALI) in June 2008, and represents a commitment to ensure that all labour inspectorate activities are underpinned by professionalism, respect, neutrality and integrity. There are six key values in this code:

  1. knowledge and competence
  2. honesty and integrity
  3. courtesy and respect
  4. objectivity, neutrality and fairness
  5. commitment and responsiveness, and
  6. consistency between personal and professional behaviours.

The six values in the Global Code of Integrity reinforce the principles in the departmental code of conduct. The departmental code provides a framework to guide ethical conduct based on five core principles:

  1. respect for the law and system of government
  2. respect for persons
  3. integrity
  4. diligence, and
  5. economy and efficiency.

If you feel that an inspector has not operated within this framework, you are able to make a complaint.
