Aussie Spray Booths (QLD) Pty Ltd

Summary

Incident description:

A worker sustained burns to his torso when his clothing ignited whilst he attempted to fix a faulty spray gun. After cleaning the gun with thinners and a wire brush, the worker noticed a metal pin was damaged and commenced welding it. The worker's shirt and shorts (contaminated by thinners) caught fire.

WHSQ investigation findings:

The defendant did not provide safe operating procedures in the use of welding equipment nor provided induction training to the worker on flammable liquids and sources of ignition.

Court result:

The defendant was found guilty and fined $22,500. No conviction was recorded.

Considerations for prevention:

(Commentary under this heading may be additional to material before the court.)

Employers should implement controls to manage the risks associated with the use of flammable liquids. This includes wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), training, and developing a safe system of work when working with flammable liquids, welding and sources of ignition.
