Oakey Abattoir Pty Ltd

Summary

Incident description:

A worker butchering a beast cut himself in the stomach when training another worker on cutting a carcass.

WHSQ investigation findings:

The investigation found that the injured worker usually stood to one side of the carcass when working. However, on this occasion had stood in front of the carcass as he was training another worker in a confined space. The lack of space contributed to the worker having to work in such a way that he was forced to cut towards himself.

Court result:

The defendant was found guilty and fined $31,000. No conviction was recorded.

Considerations for prevention:

(Commentary under this heading may be additional to material before the court.)

Employers should conduct a risk assessment to determine the safe operating procedure giving consideration to the environmental factors in the work area (e.g. lack of space when working with or training others). A risk assessment will identify if the environment factors will allow the worker to complete the task safely and without risk to the worker or others in the area. Employers should also consider the use of personal protective equipment for workers such as mesh aprons and knives with a ball point tips.
