1.0 Introduction

Applicants for a self-insurance licence under the Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 (PDF, 1.6 MB) are required to undergo assessment of their workplace health and safety performance as part of the evaluation process.

The Department of Justice and Attorney-General, through Workplace Health and Safety Queensland administers the performance assessment, part of which involves an audit of workplace health and safety management systems. Performance criteria and guidelines for the assessment are also published by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

These assessments are to be undertaken by third party auditors accredited by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland working under agreed terms and conditions. A register of auditors will be maintained under these arrangements and applicant self-insurers are required to choose persons from the register to carry out the required audit in accordance with published criteria and conditions.

To be considered for accreditation, a range of competencies in workplace health and safety management systems must be demonstrated together with evidence of applied audit experience in a range of industry sectors.
