Danger: electrical split conduits

The Electrical Safety Office is seeking the support of the electrical industry to help raise awareness of property owners and other tradespeople about the dangers of electrical metallic split conduits.

Electrical metallic split conduits enclose single insulated cables in a painted metal tube. The technique was abandoned in the 1950s but the conduits can still be found in some older properties.

Due to deterioration through ageing or modifications made over the years, earthing continuity may be lost and a potentially fatal situation may arise.

The electrical industry, property owners and non-electrical tradespeople are urged to take precautions when dealing with these conduits and re-wire the properties if the split conduits are showing signs of deterioration.
