Work Safe Week 2007

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland presented Work Safe Week from 21 to 27 October 2007 to promote safety messages and engage business and industry in more than 450 events and activities across Queensland.

The annual event involved activities ranging from safety fun days featuring displays, demonstrations and free sausage sizzles, to electrical safety workshops, breakfast seminars and construction roadshows.

Promotional resources were also produced and distributed including posters, brochures and merchandise and a practical guide to preventing slips, trips and falls.

Work Safe Week 2008 will be held from Sunday 19 to Saturday 25 October.

2007 Work Safe Awards winners

The 2007 Work Safe Awards, presented for the second year by the department, celebrated the great work being done by workers and businesses throughout Queensland to improve health and safety at the grass roots.

The awards provide an opportunity to recognise and promote best practice and encourage workplaces to develop and share innovative safety solutions that will result in safer and healthier workplaces throughout the state.

They also offer many benefits for companies including hard evidence of organisational performance, a positive impact on workforce morale and corporate pride, and the promotion of a positive image to the local community.

A panel of judges representing industry, employer associations, unions, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland and the Electrical Safety Office chose seven finalists from 52 entries.

Best workplace health and safety management system

Townsville City Council for embarking on a four-year safety cultural change program aimed at improving health and safety for its 1300 employees who undertake a diverse range of work activities to deliver infrastructure and services to the Townsville community.

Best solution to an identified health and safety issue

Watpac Australia Pty Ltd, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, for developing a safe means of installing the 20,000m2 of fabric membrane roof panels in the construction of Skilled Park Stadium at Robina, the home of the Gold Coast Titans rugby league club.

Best individual contribution to workplace health and safety

John “Dick” Turpin, Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd, positive influence he had on the safety culture in to workplace health and safety, in particular the Milton, Brisbane, for his many years of dedication the high-risk construction industry through his strong mentoring and training skills.

Best solution to an identified electrical safety issue

Upper Haughton Harvesting Pty Ltd, Giru, north of Ayr, for simple and cost-effective solutions to minimising the risk of contact with overhead power lines when sugar cane unloading and bin handling are undertaken at rail sidings.

Townsville City Council, Watpac Australia Pty Ltd and John (Dick) Turpin from Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd have been announced as finalists in the national Safe Work Australia Awards to be presented in April by the Office of the Australian Safety and Compensation Council.
