eSAFE Construction - March 2011

The past few months have seen a significant number of Queenslanders suffer, both financially and emotionally, from the devastation of the recent floods and Tropical Cyclone Yasi. This edition of Construction eSAFE focuses on the impact of these disasters including the financial and psychosocial issues that employers and employees should be aware of and may experience.

This edition also includes information on Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s latest campaigns and activities.

OHS harmonisation update
The national agenda for the harmonisation of work health and safety laws and practices is progressing and will be a focus for Workplace Health and Safety Queensland over the next twelve months. In the January edition of Construction eSAFE we highlighted the consultation period for the draft national Work Health and Safety Regulations as well as some of the proposed key changes.

The cost of recovery
At the height of the recent floods, three quarters of the state was declared a disaster zone by the State Government. Three weeks later, North Queensland was hit by Cyclone Yasi, the largest and most severe tropical cyclone Queensland has experienced in recent times. The sheer scale of both events will have an emotional and economic impact on many individuals and businesses for several years.

An industry stress test
Disaster recovery and rebuilding work is likely to be stressful and anxious for many workers and employers, particularly in light of the difficult period many contractors have experienced as a result of the global financial crisis and extensive wet weather. It is critical to remember that, if not addressed, excessive stress can represent a significant hazard that can result in adverse effects on professional performance, personal relationships and mental health.

As the flood waters receded, many home and business owners were left with extensive damage to properties. With a network of inspectors already stationed in regional offices across the state, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) was in a unique position help those in need.

Zero Harm at Work leadership program forum
The construction industry will hold its third Zero Harm at Work Leadership Program Forum on 29 March 2011 at the Conrad Treasury Hotel. The theme for the forum will be Suicide Prevention in the Construction Industry, with presentations by Mates In Construction, Mirvac and McNabs.

Heads of Workplace Safety Authorities 'Work on roads' campaign
The national 'work on roads' campaign promoting safe work practices for people working on or near roads is scheduled to commence in March 2011.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland will provide resources and hold workshops from March 2011 to help workplaces prepare for site visits.
