New national construction induction card and training requirements
On 1 July 2009 Queensland launched a new look construction induction card formally known as the 'blue card'. The new general safety induction card will transition to the nationally agreed format and will be referred to as the 'construction induction card'.

Transport Safety Summit
Over 140 representatives of the transport industry attended the Transport and Storage Safety Summit on 26 May 2009 in Brisbane.

The Safety Summit highlighted the need to build practical solutions to assist all members of the supply chain to manage common risks, in particular musculoskeletal disorders relating to the lifting and handling of goods, slips, trips and falls and being hit by moving objects.

Operating a mobile crane (slewing/non-slewing)
From 30 August 2009 an employer must not allow a person in charge of and/or operating a mobile crane (slewing/non-slewing) to also undertake their own dogging work or supervise a trainee dogger, even if the operator is also a licensed dogger. The technical guidance note is now available providing more information for industry.

The May edition of the eSAFE newsletter reported the court results of a proceeding against Thomas Borthwick & Sons (Australia) Pty Ltd under the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995. Thomas Borthwick & Sons (Australia) Pty Ltd have successfully appealed the conviction. The matter has been remitted to the Industrial Magistrates at Mackay to be further determined.

Brisbane abattoir fined $35 000 over safety breach
A Riverview company has been fined $35 000 after a worker was injured at Dinmore abattoir in January 2008.

A citrus fruit producer has been fined $32 500 after a worker was injured when a tractor ran over him at a Gayndah orchard in September 2007.

Compliance and enforcement

Amendment to the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008
Changes to the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008 came into effect on 1 July 2009. A key amendment relates to the new nationally agreed unit of competency for construction induction training to replace the Queensland accredited course '30215QLD Course in General Safety Induction (Construction Industry)' (commonly referred to as the 'blue card' course). Amendment of codes of practice
On 1 September 2008 the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 1997 was repealed and replaced by the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008. A number of workplace health and safety codes of practice have been amended to bring them into line with the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008.
