Queensland business Frook Pty Ltd from Townsville was highly commended for its workplace health and safety achievements at the recent national Safe Work Australia Awards. Frook won the best solution to an identified health and safety issue at the Workplace Health and Safety Queensland awards in October 2009 which saw it entered into the national awards.
As winners of the Queensland Work Safe Awards, Frook’s owners Ken Jaffers and Peter Stevens went on to represent Queensland at the national Safe Work Australia Awards, receiving nation-wide recognition and exposure. Their entry ‘the Frook’ is a safer, faster and more cost effective method of temporary bracing when installing trusses on buildings.
The national awards, presented at Parliament House in Canberra on 28 April 2010, acknowledged 36 finalists across the nation in their efforts to reduce the number of deaths, injury and disease in Australian workplaces.

Mr Stevens said that the Queensland Work Safe Awards and the national Safe Work Australia Awards were a great experience and provided unlimited opportunities, recognition and exposure for businesses.
“We are grateful to be recognised and considered one of the best for our health and safety initiatives in Queensland and Australia,” he said.
“We have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are thankful to be able to share our safety solutions to help keep workplaces safer.
“I would encourage all Queensland businesses to enter the Queensland Work Safe Awards no matter how small you may think your efforts are,” Mr Stevens said.
Safe Work Australia Chair, Mr Tom Phillips AM said that by becoming a finalist in these Awards each individual and organisation has demonstrated an impressive commitment to work health and safety.
"These Awards recognise the important work that organisations and individuals are doing to make work health and safety a top priority to ensure everyone returns home safely.
"More than 135,000 Australians are seriously injured at work each year and more than 260 die as a result of work-related injuries and this can be prevented through the adoption of safer work practices," Mr Phillips said.
