WHSQ to teach farmers how to be safe at the Rockhampton Beef Australia 2009

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland's (WHSQ) rural inspectors will be on hand to provide beef farmers with practical health and safety advice during the Beef Australia 2009 expo held in Rockhampton from 4–9 May.

The rural industry has the highest fatality rate out of all industry groups within Queensland, and almost one third of those fatalities occurred in the grain, sheep and beef cattle production industries.

One of the key projects under the Rural Industry Action Plan is to increase the capacity of stakeholders to identify and manage high risk activities. This is particularly important in the beef cattle industry.

Many workplace injuries in the beef cattle industry are a result of slips trips and falls in cattle yards and when mustering. WHSQ will be discussing practical solutions to reducing the risk of these, especially with older workers.

The Beef Australia expo is one of the largest cattle events in the world and is expected to inject millions of dollars into the local economy and significantly boost export trade income.

Delegates and visitors to the expo are encouraged to visit the Queensland Government pavilion for information about skilling and careers, business and community development, science and innovation, sustainability and health.

More than 60,000 people are expected to attend from around Australia and overseas. It will be a great forum to showcase the best the Queensland beef industry has to offer in terms of science, sustainability and innovation.
