Ensure OHS policies are followed
A Cleveland scaffolding supply and installation company was fined $30,000 after a worker was injured at a Victoria Point construction site in February 2007.
Hang On Scaffolds Pty Ltd pleaded guilty in the Cleveland Industrial Magistrates Court on 16 May 2008 to breaching sections 24 and 28(1) of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 (PDF, 766 kB), having failed to ensure the safety of others was not affected by the way it carried out its business.
The Workplace Health and Safety Queensland investigation found the hanging scaffolding had been improperly installed, against the company's own policies, and had collapsed while two workers were standing on it.
The court heard one of the workers received a fractured cheek and eye socket when he was struck on the head by falling debris.
The court ordered the company to pay investigation, professional and court costs totalling $3,302. No conviction was recorded.
As a result of the incident, the company undertook to ensure safe installation procedures are followed in the future.
