Housekeeping
Poor housekeeping may result in slips, trips and falls resulting in injuries. It can also contribute to infection by providing an unhygienic environment.
Control measures
- Regularly inspect floors to make sure they are free from hair, nail clippings etc.
- Promptly clean up any spilt oil, chemicals, talc or water.
- Do not run electrical extension leads across the floor.
- Remove boxes, rubbish etc. from walkways.
Floor surfaces
Uneven or slippery floors can hinder smooth movement, make floor surfaces unpredictable and increase the likelihood of slips, trips and falls.
Control measures
- Use non-slip surfaces. This does not have to be expensive, e.g. use carpets and mats in areas where health and hygiene regulations will not be contravened.
- Wear adequate footwear that has a stable, non-slip base and ensure good support and protection.
- Provide rubber mats and signs where oil-based sprays are used near walkways.
- Remove spills of water, oil, chemicals, wax, hair and other substances from the floor as soon as possible.
Read more about control measures in the Guide to preventing slips, trips and falls.
Lighting
Poor lighting can adversely affect the safety of tasks in the hairdressing, nail and beauty industry. It can contribute to:
- accidents and injuries
- tired, sore eyes
- headaches
Common lighting problems include too much or too little light. Poor lighting conditions cause glare and shadows, which can force workers to use awkward body positions to perform work.
Control measures
- Replace bulbs or tubes as they age and lose light emitting capacity.
- Maintain bulbs and tubes in a clean, efficient state.
- Keep windows clean.
- Provide blinds, curtains or window tinting to control excessive glare.
