Plant includes any machinery, equipment, appliance, pressure vessel, personal protective equipment, and component of plant and a fitting, connection, accessory or adjunct to plant.
Examples of plant in the hairdressing, nail and beauty industry include:
- hair dryers
- scissors
- air conditioning systems
- sun lamps
- electrolysis machines
- autoclaves
- wax pots
- lasers
- electric shaver and hair clippers
- water heaters
- air conditioning units
- perm and colour accelerators
- curling irons
- blow dryers
- cosmetic and tattoo equipment
- various beauty therapy electrical equipment
- electric nail file and nail drill
- gel lights
- gloves
- safety glasses
Factors to consider when purchasing or obtaining plant include:
- ensuring the plant has been constructed to an acceptable standard
- ensuring the control devices satisfactorily perform their function, e.g. start/stop switches
- ensuring guarding is provided where necessary to minimise risk of injury
- ensuring noise levels are not a risk to hearing or health
Plant should not obstruct doorways and emergency exits and should also be secured against movement.
Control measures
Isolation
- Turn off and unplug plant before cleaning, maintenance or repair work commences.
- Withdraw damaged plant from service until any risks to health and safety have been assessed and controlled.
Administrative controls
- Provide training and instruction in the safe use and maintenance of plant.
- Provide adequate supervision to workers and other persons.
- Make sure plant is operated, serviced, maintained and repaired according to the manufacturer's specifications.
- Develop and implement an inspection program for plant.
- Keep a record of plant inspection, servicing, maintenance and repair.
