Definition of an erector and installer and their obligations
An installer or erector of plant is any person who sets up, assembles, places in position and connects or otherwise makes plant ready for use.
An erector or installer of plant has an obligation to:
- to erect or install the plant in a way that is safe and without risk to health; and
- to ensure that nothing about the way the plant was erected or installed makes it unsafe and a risk to health when used properly.
Only a competent person should install/erect and commission plant.
Plant should be installed/erected in accordance with the designer’s or manufacturer’s instructions.
Erectors and installers of plant must be aware of the obligations as stated within:

Practical advice to help erectors and installers meet these obligations is provided below and are stated in full in Part 4 of the Plant Code of Practice 2005.
Safe erection and installation
Part 4.3 of the Plant Code of Practice 2005 provides practical advice on how to:
- ensure that nothing about the way plant is erected or installed makes it unsafe for the end user
- ensure that the process of erecting or installing plant does not create any risk to health and safety
Safe commissioning of plant
Part 4.4 of the Plant Code of Practice 2005 provides practical advice on how to:
- ensure that nothing about the way plant is commissioned makes it unsafe for the end user
- ensure that the process of commissioning plant does not create any risk to health and safety; and
- what information should be provided by the commissioner of plant to the employer.
