What is radio frequency radiation (RFR)?
Radio frequency radiation or RFR is a form of non-ionising radiation that comes naturally from the sun, galaxies and the earth. Humans can also generate RFR through a variety of applications such as cooking, communications, welding, medicine, and heating wood, metal and plastics.
Who is at risk of exposure to RFR?
Radio frequency (RF) generating plant, machinery and equipment may be used at workplaces that perform:
- forging
- annealing
- tempering
- brazing or soldering
- sealing of plastics
- glue drying
- curing particle boards and panels
- heating fabrics and paper
- cooking by means of a microwave oven
Workers in industrial workplaces that use RF generating plant are at risk of exposure to levels of RF fields that may cause health problems.
For further information on radio frequency (RF) generating plant, read section 2 of Guide to the Safe Use in Industry of Radio Frequency Generating Plant (PDF, 296 KB).
