Point of sale area setup
Make your workplace a less attractive target for offenders by making it difficult for them to access cash.
Risk factors
- Easy access to the cash drawer.
- Poor visibility so that the point of sale operator cannot see and cannot be seen from within and from outside the workplace.
Suggested measures
- Site the point of sale area away from entrances and exits.
- Minimise visibility of the cash drawer, especially when it is open.
- Raise the floor of the point of sale area.
- Install physical barriers to the point of sale area, such as:
- anti-vault facilities
- security glass
- bullet proof enclosure
- staff-controlled rising screens
- wide counters; and
- cash transfer ecesses under fixed screens .
- Place speed bumps in the exit lane if the point of sale is a drive-through window.
- Remove objects on or outside windows that hide the point of sale operator from view.
- Ensure that inside lighting is brighter than outside lighting (but not so bright that the point of sale operator cannot see outside).
