Retail workplace setup

Security should be a prime consideration when planning or fitting out a retail workplace.

Risk factor

• An ability to enter or hide within the workplace unnoticed.

Suggested measures

• Design the retail workplace so that the point of sale operator can see everyone who enters the business.
• Lower shelf heights and clear away cluttered areas so there are no places for a person to hide or prepare for an assault.
• Provide adequate lighting throughout the retail workplace and around the main public entrance.
• Remove any physical elements near the entrance that could be used as a hiding place.
• Train staff to be alert to the whereabouts and activities of customers, especially during busy times.
• Fix a bell on the door of the main public entrance.
• Install a detection device such as a security mirror or surveillance camera (monitored by the point of sale operator or someone in another area).
• Install an alarm system such as movement detectors, duress buttons or magnetic reed switches.
• Install a device that allows the point of sale operator to remotely close the public access doors.
