Retail workplace setup
Security should be a prime consideration when planning or fitting out a retail workplace.
Risk factor
- An ability to enter or hide within the workplace unnoticed
Suggested measures
- Design the retail workplace so that the point of sale operator can see everyone who enters the business
- Lower shelf heights and clear away cluttered areas so there are no places for a person to hide or prepare for an assault
- Provide adequate lighting throughout the retail workplace and around the main public entrance
- Remove any physical elements near the entrance that could be used as a hiding place
- Train staff to be alert to the whereabouts and activities of customers, especially during busy times
- Fix a bell on the door of the main public entrance
- Install a detection device such as a security mirror or surveillance camera (monitored by the point of sale operator or someone in another area)
- Install an alarm system such as movement detectors, duress buttons or magnetic reed switches
- Install a device that allows the point of sale operator to remotely close the public access doors
