Changes to occupational licensing for anyone operating or using plant and equipment have been ongoing since 1 July 2007. These changes impact on licence holders, employers and training and assessment providers.
The changes seek to improve workplace health and safety outcomes by:
The changes also seek to address potential identity fraud through the adoption of renewable and photographic licences for certain high risk work. These new licence cards will be progressively introduced from 1 July 2008.
For more information, refer to the fact sheets:
Previously, licences for prescribed occupations were issued in the following formats:
All 'old style' paper-based tickets which have not been converted to the new licence formats are now invalid. If you hold an 'old style' paper ticket, which you have not converted to the new format, you must do so before you can legally work in the occupation/s for which you hold paper tickets.
All paper tickets must be converted to the new licence types by 30 April 2010. Depending on the occupational class, most of the paper ticket classes will either convert to a plastic non-renewable certificate or a photographic and renewable licence.
You must make application (PDF, 167 KB) to the department if you wish to retain your licence.
If you don't want to retain your licence, no further action from you is required.
If you have one or more plastic card licences issued since 1992 you will be contacted by mail only if you need to change any of your licences to a renewable and photographic licence. Not all current plastic licence classes need to be changed to the new format. It is only those which have been categorised nationally as high risk work which need to be changed. (See which licences are changing and which are not).
In the event you need to transition any of your current plastic licences to the renewable and photographic licence format, the time at which you will be contacted by the Department will depend on the year in which you obtained your most recent licence. To check on when you will be notified, please refer to the timetable at this link: Find out more about the conversion of plastic card licences issued since 1992.
If your licence class is not being transitioned no action is required.
Employers need to be aware of the changes to licensing occurring from 1 July 2008, including:
As well as the continued obligation of employers associated with occupational licensing.
