What are you doing for Safe Work Australia Week (SWAW)?

If you haven't got a plan for how you, your business and employees will take part in Safe Work Australia Week 2009, now is your chance.

It's important to use the week to make you and your workplace healthier and safer. As a state, let's band together with the rest of Australia in this national week to make workplace health and safety everybody's focus.

There are two ways you can get involved:

  1. Participate in one of WHSQ's many activities across Queensland
    Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) is hosting a week full of activities with a major event happening each day during SWAW. View our event calendar to find out more.

  2. Run an activity or event in your workplace
    Here are some ideas to help you start planning your activity:

Activities and events

Housekeeping
  • hold an office clean up day to ensure workplaces are safe and clean
  • conduct your own workplace health and safety inspection

Fun and interactive
  • produce a daily safety quiz or trivia session
  • organise a hazard hunt in your workplace
  • coordinate a safety competition - design a safety poster or suggest a safety slogan
  • hold a staff BBQ and discuss your organisation's commitment to health and safety

Fitness
  • organise a staff health assessment and gym visit
  • encourage staff to take a break and exercise to improve alertness and physical wellbeing, i.e. walk, swim, run, yoga, volley ball, soccer, bike riding, indoor cricket etc
  • enter a work team into a local sports competition

Healthy eating
  • hold breakfast, morning tea or lunch events
  • hold company BBQs or picnics
  • invite a doctor to your workplace to talk about health and wellbeing

Training and learning
  • hold a health and safety information session
  • hold a 'meet your safety team' day
  • conduct safety training
  • seminars
  • discussion forums
  • conferences
  • workshops

Workplace procedures
  • review your safety procedures
  • create an OHS suggestion box
  • coordinate an OHS committee
  • talk to staff about important health and safety topics in your workplace, i.e. stress, fatigue, sun exposure, manual tasks, first aid procedures etc
  • hold a brief discussion on a safe work procedure every day during Safe Work Australia Week
  • encourage staff to identify and speak up about a health and safety issue in their area

Note: You don't have to do it on your own. Host an event or activity in partnership with local stakeholders.
