Baulderstone Pty Ltd
Baulderstone, a building and engineering company has been servicing the Australian building and infrastructure industry for over 80 years.
Baulderstone identified working near power lines with plant as a high risk activity following a near miss on a project. With a number of devices available to prevent contact with power lines, Baulderstone undertook industry wide research to develop a 'spotter warning device' which could offer improved safety practices and further reduce the risks associated with power line contact.
A prototype warning device was built overnight using basic electronics and a standard remote garage door opener. After some refinement a spotter warning device prototype was trialled on a Baulderstone site.
The spotter warning device has both audible and visual aids including a light that indicates the spotter wants the operator's attention and an audible alarm to advise the operator to stop all operations immediately.
The device, now a mandatory safety requirement on all Baulderstone projects is cost efficient, portable, easily operated and exceeds existing controls for work near power lines.
Baulderstone wanted to share the device with the construction industry and it is now available for purchase from electrical retailers across Queensland.
