Mirvac is an Australian integrated real estate group encompassing property and luxury hotel and resort ownership and management, property development, real estate sales, architecture, urban design, interior design, landscape architecture and graphic design. Mirvac employees 4,459 staff across Australia and New Zealand.
Mirvac is fostering and developing a positive safety culture by ensuring executives and senior management are involved at the shop floor level as outlined in the Mirvac Health Safety Environment Management System and the organisation's annual health and safety objective and targets.
Safety shop floor activities undertaken by senior management have included:
- task observations to determine compliance
- attendance at workplace safety meetings
- participation at health safety environment audits and inspections
- submission of hazard notifications
- attendance at safety training courses
- oral communications to workplace employees
- implementation and participation in Mirvac's 11 e-learning workplace health and safety modules.
In 2011 senior managers, executives and the managing director undertook over 840 shop floor activities to show their commitment to health and safety and help drive a positive safety culture.
Mirvac ensures the organisations safety initiatives and solutions are shared with the variety of contractors the organisation works with as well as spreading the messages to wider industry groups. Some recent initiatives have included:
- Young Worker 'Look Out' Safety program - resulting in a 67 per cent reduction in young worker injuries
- Changing Our Behaviours Before Accidents (COBBA) task observation and recognition awards
- 'Sound Advice' Noise Awareness program
- Ultra Violet Light/Sunlight Awareness program
- Employee Assistance program - confidential counselling service for all Mirvac employees and family members
- compulsory eyewear for all workers - resulting in a 67 per cent reduction in eye injuries over two years
- compulsory gloves - resulting in a 36 per cent reduction in hand injuries at a Mirvac trial construction site in Queensland
- compulsory long sleeves and long pants at a Mirvac Queensland trial construction site - resulting in a 93 per cent reduction in lower and upper limb injuries and enhancing Ultra Violet Radiation and sunlight protection
- Life Skills for Apprentices program.
