Queensland University of Technology
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a leading educational institute with 40,000 students. The Built Environment and Engineering Faculty provide teaching and research activities in electrical, engineering, architecture and urban development fields.
Following an electrical safety review, QUT discovered live electrical testing and fault finding activities presented a number of safety risks to staff and students.
A specialised team of senior electrical engineers and laboratory technical staff was formed to assess and address the issues. The solution consisted of a combination of isolation, engineering and administrative controls.
A prototype acrylic LV testing enclosure was designed to house circuiting and prevent contact with exposed terminals. Safety switches and interlock devices were incorporated into the design to ensure the enclosure could not be opened while the circuits remained live. To ensure testing and fault finding was conducted safely a standard operating procedure was produced including online training.
The 'LV Test Box' is a flexible solution that reduces the risk of potential electrical incidents. QUT plans to manufacture twelve 'LV Test Boxes' for use in the faculty's electrical laboratories.
