What is an accredited provider and a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)?

Accredited providers are accredited under the Workplace Health and Safety legislation to assess applicants for their certificate to work in a prescribed occupation. Accredited providers will be able to assess applicants for certificates in prescribed occupations until 1 July 2007.

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) are authorised to deliver accredited training by the Department of Employment and Training (DET). As of 1 July 2007, RTOs who conduct Workplace Health and Safety courses accredited by DET for prescribed occupations will be the only organisations authorised to assess applicants in prescribed occupations.

Training in prescribed occupations is still able to occur in a variety of ways. This includes, undertaking a training course with an RTO, or on the job training with a person suitably certificated to perform the work. However, applicants will still need to be assessed by an RTO or, until 1 July 2007, an accredited provider.
